MIT Open Learning launches Universal AI to expand AI fluency with free introductory course

What Universal AI includes

MIT describes Universal AI as a self-paced, modular program built for a global audience. The curriculum starts with foundational concepts and moves into practical uses of AI across sectors.

  • Five core courses covering programming, machine learning, deep learning, large language models, decision-making, explainability, and ethics
  • Six industry-specific courses available now, including health care, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and transportation
  • AI-powered support through AskTIM on MIT Learn

MIT said the platform is available on MIT Learn, its online learning site for courses, programs, and skills resources.

“Our goal is that the learners who take Universal AI gain the foundational knowledge and understanding so that they realize the potential of AI for their careers, lives, and communities,” says Megan Mitchell, senior director of Universal Learning at Open Learning. “We also hope that the program dispels the fear and unknown about AI, and empowers learners to embrace the true potential of this transformative technology.”

Program aims to close the AI skills gap

In the announcement, MIT Open Learning said the program was created in response to growing demand for practical AI education. The institute pointed to data showing that over half of U.S. adults use generative AI, 12% use it daily at work, and 88% of global organizations have integrated AI into at least one core function, up from 78% in 2024.

Dimitris Bertsimas, vice provost for open learning, said the program was designed to serve a non-technical audience and combine MIT expertise with AI tools that adapt to learners. Megan Mitchell, senior director of Universal Learning at Open Learning, said the goal is to help learners understand AI’s potential for their careers, lives, and communities.

Pilot testing included universities, hospitals and refugees

MIT said Universal AI was piloted beginning in summer 2025 with universities, hospitals, companies, the MIT community, and refugee and displaced learners in the MIT Emerging Talent program.

The institute said the program also includes contributions from more than 30 faculty, teaching assistants, and experts across MIT, with more contributors expected as new courses are added.

Available now on MIT Learn

MIT said Universal AI is the first offering from Universal Learning, a new initiative within Open Learning focused on curricula in major areas shaping society. President Sally Kornbluth said MIT’s history of making knowledge available through Open Learning made it a natural fit to bring Universal AI to the public.
