Subnautica 2 is launching in early access without official VR support

Unknown Worlds Entertainment says Subnautica 2 will arrive in early access on May 14 without any official VR support. The studio has been saying for years that VR for the sequel is unlikely, and its latest comments do not point to a near-term change.

The original Subnautica did include basic PC VR support, but the implementation was limited.

What the studio has said

The game’s 2024 FAQ said adding VR support to Subnautica 2 “seems unlikely.” More recently, creative producer Scott MacDonald said in a developer Q&A last summer: “While we’re big fans of VR, and I have loads of headsets myself, we’re not currently working on VR support, but who knows what could happen in the future.”

Unknown Worlds has also not expanded first-party VR support across its other games. Subnautica: Below Zero, released in 2021, did not get official VR support even though it launched during a period of renewed industry interest in consumer VR.

What players can expect instead

The sequel is being built in Unreal Engine 5, so community VR tools may become the main option for players who want to try the game in virtual reality. The article points to injector tools such as Praydog’s UEVR as a possible workaround while players wait for mods or community settings.

Unknown Worlds says early access means the game will continue to grow over the next two to three years, with an official 1.0 release expected later. For now, though, there is no indication that official VR support is part of the near-term plan.

  • Early access release date: May 14
  • Official VR support: not included at launch
  • Likely path for VR players: community mods and injector tools
